Zygomaturus Colouring

Zygomaturus trilobus was a large plant-eating marsupial from Pleistocene Australia. Fossils are known from mainland sites and Tasmania, including collections in Museums Victoria. It belonged to the diprotodontids, a family related to living wombats and koalas, but it was much larger than either. Estimates commonly place it around 500 to 700 kilograms, with a barrel-shaped body, short sturdy legs and a broad skull. Its unusual nasal bones and three-lobed front teeth inspired the name trilobus. Some reconstructions give it a short flexible lip or tiny trunk, but soft tissues do not fossilise, so that feature remains uncertain. Studies of its teeth and habitat suggest it browsed mixed vegetation in relatively moist forests and woodlands near Australia's margins. No reliable lifespan can be calculated from the fossil record. The species vanished during the Late Pleistocene, probably in the broad interval around 45,000 to 40,000 years ago. Scientists cannot identify a final animal, an exact final year or one proven cause. Australia experienced increasing aridity and major ecological changes, while humans and megafauna coexisted for thousands of years. Research discusses climate, vegetation change, fire and possible hunting, but evidence for the balance among these pressures is still debated. It is safest to describe the extinction as a complex event rather than a simple single-cause story. The page shows Zygomaturus in a damp forest clearing so its heavy, wombat-like shape is easy to explore. Try warm brown, grey-brown, tawny gold or muted olive for its coat, with cream around the muzzle and belly. The cycads can be deep green, ferns bright green and creek light blue. Use tan and grey for stones, then add a pale blue or soft yellow sky. Broad side-to-side strokes work well on the big body. Short strokes can create a shaggy edge around the neck without filling every space. Look closely at the wide nose, rounded back and four strong feet. Keeping the background colours lighter than the animal will make this remarkable Australian herbivore stand out.
