Temple of Artemis Colouring

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was a huge sanctuary dedicated to Artemis, a goddess connected with nature, protection and the hunt. Ephesus stood on the western coast of Anatolia, near the modern town of Selcuk in present-day Turkiye. Several temples occupied the site over many centuries. The most famous version was built from marble and supported by more than one hundred tall columns. Ancient visitors admired its great size, shining stone and carved decoration, and it became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The building was damaged and rebuilt more than once. A famous fire destroyed an earlier temple in 356 BCE, and a later grand temple rose on the same sacred ground. Earthquakes, changing coastlines, later damage and the reuse of stone eventually left only scattered remains. Today, a reconstructed column helps visitors imagine the original scale. A Greek-style temple used repeated columns to support horizontal beams and a triangular pediment above the entrance. The wide steps lifted the building above the surrounding ground, making the approach feel ceremonial. Sculpted figures and decorative patterns once enriched parts of the roof and columns. Because no complete ancient view survives, this colouring page uses a simple, child-friendly reconstruction. A peaceful deer in front recalls Artemis's link with wild animals, while the flowering bush adds a touch of the natural world. Colour the temple marble cream, pale grey, soft pink or warm white. Use a slightly darker shade between the column flutes so each tall column stays easy to see. The triangular roof can have terracotta-red tiles, golden decorations or blue and red patterns inspired by ancient painted architecture. Make the broad steps light tan with gentle grey shadows beneath each edge. Colour the deer golden brown, chestnut or soft grey, leaving the belly and muzzle lighter. Add dark hooves, a black nose and a tiny white eye highlight. The flowering bush can carry green leaves with pink, purple, yellow or orange blossoms. Use light blue for the sky and sandy green or beige for the ground. Try long vertical strokes on the columns, short curved strokes on the deer and small circular strokes on the flowers. Keep the open background simple so the long row of columns remains the clearest lesson in this impressive ancient building.
