Swordfish Ocean Colouring Page

The swordfish is a powerful open-ocean traveller found in tropical, temperate, and sometimes cool waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. It migrates long distances between warm spawning areas and productive feeding grounds. During the day, a swordfish may descend into deep, cold water to hunt squid and fish, then move nearer the warmer surface at night. Scientists usually give swordfish a lifespan of about nine years, although some may live longer. An average adult seen in fisheries is often near 2 metres long, but exceptional fish can reach about 4.5 metres and more than 500 kilograms. Females generally grow larger than males. The swordfish gets its name from the remarkable flat, pointed bill at the front of its head. It does not spear prey like food on a fork. Instead, it can sweep the bill sideways to stun or injure schooling fish and squid, then circle back to eat. Special tissues near its eyes help keep its brain and eyes warmer than the surrounding deep water, improving its vision while hunting. Its strong crescent-shaped tail and streamlined body are built for fast swimming. Adult swordfish also lose the obvious teeth and scales found on young fish. The little school in this scene shows what the hunter may encounter while gliding through open water. For a natural colour plan, shade the swordfish's back dark brown, charcoal, navy, or nearly black. Blend the sides into smoky grey and leave the belly silver-white. The long bill can be grey-blue with a lighter lower edge, while the tall front fin and crescent tail can be dark blue or slate. Colour the small fish silver, pale yellow, or soft blue so the swordfish remains the star. Build the sea with bands of turquoise, ocean blue, and deep indigo, but leave bubbles white or very pale blue. Follow the long body contours with smooth strokes to make the fish look fast. You may also invent a fantasy swordfish with a purple back, teal fins, and a shining silver sword.
