Squirrel Babies Colouring

Join a busy squirrel family gathering acorns beneath a strong oak tree. Many kinds of tree squirrels live across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. They prefer places with trees, including forests, woodlands, parks, and gardens, because branches provide food, shelter, and safe travelling routes. Oak trees are especially useful when they produce acorns, and this page shows one adult with three young squirrels collecting the nutritious nuts from the ground. Tree-squirrel size depends on the species. A familiar squirrel may have a body about 20 to 30 centimetres long, with a fluffy tail almost as long again, while other species are smaller or much larger. Many wild tree squirrels live about 3 to 6 years, though individuals that avoid predators and illness can live longer. Their curved claws grip bark, strong back legs power long jumps, and flexible ankles help them climb down trunks headfirst. The sweeping tail helps with balance, warmth, communication, and even shade. Young squirrels may be called kits, kittens, or pups. They are born in a leafy nest called a drey or in a secure tree hollow. At first they are tiny and helpless, but later they follow their mother, learn climbing routes, and discover which foods are safe. Squirrels eat seeds, nuts, buds, fruit, fungi, and other available foods. They often bury extra nuts for later. Forgotten stores can sometimes sprout, helping new trees grow. In this scene, the youngsters copy the adult by holding and inspecting acorns under the oak. Choose rusty red, warm brown, soft grey, golden tan, or black for the squirrel coats. The adult can use one shade while the three youngsters receive lighter or slightly varied colours. Add cream to the bellies and around the muzzles, then use dark brown for noses and claws. Make each bushy tail lively with long strokes following its curve. Oak leaves may be fresh green or autumn yellow, orange, red, and brown. Colour the acorn caps dark brown with lighter tan nuts, and give the trunk several gentle brown tones. Crayons fill the large tails and tree quickly, while pencils keep paws, whiskers, leaf veins, and cap patterns neat. Leave eye highlights white and build colour slowly so every acorn remains easy to see.
