South German Shield Colouring

Meet the South German Shield, a domestic fancy pigeon whose country or region of origin is southern Germany, especially Württemberg. Its coloured wing shields sit like a neat roof over an otherwise white bird, while a high, free-standing round crest with side rosettes gives the head a noble outline. This is a medium, sturdy refined field-pigeon type with a broad chest and nearly horizontal posture; exact weight varies by national show system. This page turns those real breed features into large, friendly shapes that young colourists can recognize without making the bird look like a cartoon chicken. It is an old South German colour breed and was mentioned in an 1818 pigeon book. That early date is documented, but no single founding breeder is reliably identified. Like every domestic pigeon breed, it belongs to the species Columba livia and ultimately descends from the wild rock pigeon. It is best understood as a carefully selected loft bird, not as a separate wild species. A suitable home is A well-ventilated loft with clean perches, nest boxes and a safe garden flight; its clean feet tolerate ordinary dry loft floors well. The elevated crest stays neat when nest openings and perches are roomy, and regular bathing helps maintain the close, smooth body plumage. Smooth, clean footing and safe perch spacing help prevent sore toes and damaged feathers. Offer a balanced pigeon grain or pellet ration, suitable grit and minerals, fresh water every day, and a shallow bath. A well-kept domestic pigeon commonly lives about 8 to 15 years, and some live longer, but lifespan depends on genetics, clean housing, nutrition, veterinary attention and protection from predators. Children should admire and colour pigeons while an adult handles real birds gently. Colouring guide: Keep the head, neck, breast, belly, tail and primary flight feathers white. Fill only the large outlined wing shield with your chosen variety colour—glossy black, red, yellow or blue are excellent choices. You can add two darker bars or a few broad checks inside a blue shield, but leave plenty of open colour space for young hands. Trace the round crest lightly so every fan-like feather and both rosettes remain visible. Colour the eye dark with a fine red rim, the beak pale, and the clean feet rosy red. Use terracotta on the roof tiles, warm cream on the wall, green for the vine and purple or green for the grapes. A light grey courtyard will make the bright shield pattern stand out. Before you finish, compare the two feet, the wing edges and the tail so no small section is missed. The simple background supports the story of the breed's origin, while the pigeon remains the star of the page. There is no single “correct” picture: a careful realistic palette teaches breed features, and an imaginative rainbow palette can be just as joyful.
