Sloth Family Colouring

Say hello to a gentle sloth parent and baby hanging upside down from a rainforest branch. Sloths live in the tropical forests of Central and South America, where they spend nearly all their lives among the trees. The three long curved claws on each visible hand help identify these animals as three-toed sloths. Those claws work like natural hooks, allowing a sloth to rest securely beneath a branch without using lots of energy. Their slow movement is not laziness; it is a clever way to survive on leaves that provide relatively little energy. A typical three-toed sloth has a body about 50 to 60 centimetres long and may weigh roughly 3.5 to 6 kilograms. Wild sloths can live around 20 to 30 years, although exact lifespan differs among species and habitats. A newborn clings tightly to its mother’s belly and travels with her for several months. During that time the baby learns which leaves are safe to eat, how to move through connected branches, and where to rest. Sloths are also surprisingly capable swimmers. Their fur grows in a direction that helps rainwater run off while they hang upside down, and tiny algae can give the coat a greenish tint that helps camouflage them. Colour the adult and baby with warm grey, taupe, sandy brown, or soft chocolate. Add a faint olive-green touch to a few fur sections if you want to show the algae that sometimes lives there. Make the face masks a slightly darker brown while keeping the muzzles pale. The branch can be tan or deep brown, and the leaves might use several greens. Try bright coral, pink, yellow, or violet for the simple flowers so the quiet animals remain the main focus. Use the side of a crayon for the large rounded bodies and a sharpened pencil for curved claws, eyes, noses, and leaf veins. Follow the short fur strokes instead of scribbling across them. Keep the claws clearly separated from the branch so children can see how each sloth hangs. Finish with a very pale blue or green background if desired, leaving plenty of white space for a calm, airy rainforest feeling.
