Sivatherium Colouring Page

Sivatherium giganteum was a huge extinct member of the giraffe family from the Siwalik Hills of India and Pakistan. Related Sivatherium species also lived across parts of Africa. It looked unlike either living giraffe family member. Instead of a very long neck and slender legs, it had a short thick neck, massive shoulders and sturdy limbs. A modern three-dimensional reconstruction estimated a representative adult mass near 1,250 kilograms, with a possible range around 850 to 1,800 kilograms. That makes it a candidate for the largest ruminant mammal ever known, although it was not elephant-sized as older pictures sometimes claimed. Males carried two smaller front ossicones and a larger branching pair behind them, creating a spectacular four-part crown. These were bony skin-covered structures related to giraffe ossicones, not deer antlers. The best-known Asian species lived around the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary and disappeared by the early Pleistocene, roughly a million years ago. There is no named last Sivatherium, and no direct account of its extinction. Fossils indicate broad environmental changes as woodlands, grasslands and animal communities shifted. A heavy browser may have been affected when food and habitats changed, but scientists cannot yet identify one cause. Because it vanished long before modern humans or written history in the region, claims of a specific final hunt would be invented. Colour the body in tawny brown, reddish chestnut, sandy beige or grey-brown. Add a lighter cream belly and darker colour along the shoulders. The four head ornaments can be warm brown, ochre or deep grey, perhaps with lighter tips. Use leafy greens for the shrubs, tan for dry grass and pale purple or blue-grey for the foothills. The tiny bird may be yellow, blue or green. Straight strokes down the legs will show their strength, while short curved strokes around the neck and shoulders make the animal look solid. Carefully trace the two smaller front knobs and large branching rear pair so all four are easy to distinguish. This unusual crown and heavy build are the clues that Sivatherium was a special giraffe relative, not a moose, ox or elephant.
