Shunosaurus Tail Colouring

Welcome to a leafy Middle Jurassic woodland, where a sturdy Shunosaurus is taking a gentle walk. Shunosaurus lived roughly 168 to 160 million years ago in the region that is now Sichuan Province in China. Its name means “Sichuan lizard,” and many well-preserved skeletons have helped palaeontologists understand this unusual early sauropod. Shunosaurus was about 9 to 10 metres long, around the length of a city bus. That made it much smaller than giant sauropods such as Barosaurus, yet it was still an impressive animal. It walked on four strong legs, carried a moderately long neck and small head, and ate ferns, cycads, and other plants. Its greatest surprise was at the end of its tail: a rounded bony club, sometimes shown with short spikes. This natural defence could have been swung at a predator that came too close. Shunosaurus is one of the best-known sauropods with a tail club. In this colouring scene, the Shunosaurus walks between tree ferns, cycads, conifers, fallen leaves, and rounded woodland rocks. Its full body is easy to follow from the friendly little head, down the strong neck and broad back, all the way to the curved tail. The large club at the tail tip is kept clear of the plants so children can spot the dinosaur’s special feature immediately. Choose an earthy colour for the Shunosaurus, such as sage green, golden brown, warm grey, or clay red. Make the underside a lighter shade and add gentle spots or bands along the back if you like. Colour the bony tail club darker than the rest of the tail—charcoal, deep brown, or dark green will make it easy to notice. Use rich and light greens for the layers of woodland plants, brown for trunks and fallen leaves, and grey, tan, or rusty orange for the rocks. The distant conifers can be darker to create depth, while the open sky might be pale blue or a soft sunset yellow. Begin with the dinosaur’s large body shapes, then finish the smaller leaves and stones. You may also invent a bright purple or turquoise Shunosaurus, because fossil bones do not reveal its exact colours. Let the bold outlines guide your crayons, and have fun bringing this remarkable Chinese dinosaur and its ancient forest home to life.
