Shrimp Reef Colouring Page

Shrimp are small crustaceans found in almost every kind of water, from warm coral reefs and mangrove creeks to cold deep seas. Thousands of species exist, so size, colour, and lifespan vary. Many familiar reef and coastal shrimp are 2 to 15 centimetres long and live about 1 to 6 years, although some specialised deep-water species grow larger or survive longer. A shrimp has a hard outer skeleton, a curved segmented abdomen, many slender legs, a fan-shaped tail, and very long antennae that explore the water ahead. The flexible abdomen contains strong muscles. By flicking it and spreading the tail fan, a shrimp can spring backward in an instant to escape danger. Its small walking legs pick over rocks and sand, while specialised front appendages grasp food. Different species eat algae, plankton, worms, tiny animals, or scraps. Cleaner shrimp perform an unusual reef service: fish visit a cleaning station, and the shrimp carefully removes parasites and dead skin. Snapping shrimp create a sharp sound with one enlarged claw, while pistol shrimp may share a burrow with a watchful goby fish. Shrimp are also important food for many fish, seabirds, and marine mammals, making them a valuable link in ocean food webs. This picture shows one friendly shrimp resting on a reef shelf. Colour its body coral pink, pale orange, translucent cream, red and white, or even blue and violet like some reef species. Use a slightly darker shade along each abdominal segment and leave a narrow white highlight to suggest a shiny shell. The tail fan can carry bright stripes, and the small claws may match the body. Trace the long antennae with a light crayon so the black outlines stay crisp. Colour the coral shape in warm orange, pink, or golden yellow, and make the reef ledge grey, tan, or purple. The tiny fish can be a bold contrasting colour. Finish with blue-green water details and pale bubbles, keeping the large open background mostly white and easy to colour.
