Show King Colouring

The Show King is a powerful American fancy pigeon descended from the King utility tradition. It has a short, broad, firm body, a very prominent rounded breast, a thick upright neck, a broad smooth head, a short stout beak, strong legs, and a fairly short tail carried upward. The National Pigeon Association standard gives adult show weights of about 30 to 37 ounces and an ideal height near 11.75 inches. That makes this a heavy, compact pigeon rather than a tall one. The modern exhibition bird should look balanced and vigorous from every side. Breed-specific lifespan research is limited, but with appropriate weight management, clean housing, and veterinary care, domestic pigeons can often live around 8 to 15 years. Historical accounts credit Harry Baker of New Jersey with planned breeding of early Kings around 1890, using several large utility pigeons to combine beauty and productivity. The American White King Association formed in 1915 to protect a consistent White King type. The club's own history also records that C. R. King began developing the Silver King in 1909 from Silver Maltese, Runts, Mondaines, and Homers; the Silver was accepted in 1921, when the organisation became the American King Club. Later breeders shifted emphasis from utility production toward the carefully rounded Show King. Kings come in white, black, blue, red, yellow, silver, dun, checks, and other colours. For a classic White King, leave the plumage white and add only pale blue-grey shadows along the lower breast and wings. For a coloured bird, fill the large body with smooth overlapping strokes and add subtle green or purple sheen on the neck. The eye cere is a striking red, the eye bright, and the legs reddish pink. Make the loft warm brown, the feed tin silver-grey, and the sunflowers yellow with dark brown centres. Crayons work well for the broad breast, body, grass, and sky. Use pencils for the short beak, eye ring, toes, and feather edges. Follow the rounded contours so the pigeon looks solid, not flat. A fantasy King can wear royal blue and gold, fitting its grand name while keeping the strong American show shape.
