Seahorse Pair Colouring Page

Seahorses are small fish with horse-shaped heads, upright bodies, and curling tails. Around fifty species live in shallow tropical and temperate seas around much of the world. They favour sheltered places such as seagrass meadows, mangrove roots, coral reefs, and seaweed beds, where their colours and bumpy body shapes help them disappear among plants. A seahorse has no ordinary fish scales; bony plates form rings beneath its skin. It swims upright by fluttering a tiny back fin very quickly and uses smaller fins near the head to steer. Because it is not a fast swimmer, its gripping tail is useful for holding seagrass or coral during waves and currents. Seahorse size varies enormously. Tiny pygmy species are less than 2 centimetres tall, while the largest can reach about 30–35 centimetres. Many live roughly 3–5 years, although lifespan depends on species and habitat. They have no teeth and suck tiny shrimp, plankton, and other small prey through a tube-like snout. One of their most special traits is that the male carries the developing eggs in a pouch. When the babies are ready, he releases miniature seahorses into the water. In this picture, one large seahorse curls its tail around a seagrass stem while a smaller seahorse swims nearby. Real seahorses may be yellow, orange, brown, red, black, or mottled green, and some slowly change shade to match their surroundings. Choose one main colour for each animal, then use a darker shade on the body rings and a lighter shade on the belly. Try golden yellow and orange for the large seahorse and coral-pink or turquoise for the smaller one. Colour the seagrass in two or three greens, the shell cream or peach, and the sand pale tan. Add light blue to the water, keeping the bubbles white. Begin with the broad body sections, then follow each curved ring around the belly and tail. Use gentle circular strokes inside the curled tails so their spiral shapes remain clear. Finish the fins with light colour, add tiny dots to the sand, and make the background pale enough that both seahorses stand out.
