Sea Cucumber Colouring Page

The sea cucumber may look like a bumpy vegetable, but it is a living ocean animal and a relative of sea stars, brittle stars, and sea urchins. More than a thousand species live in seas around the world, from warm coral reefs and rocky shores to the dark deep ocean. Most move slowly across sand, mud, or rock using rows of tiny tube feet. Species vary greatly in size: some are only a few centimetres long, many are 10 to 30 centimetres, and a few giants can approach 2 metres. Lifespan also differs by species, but many are thought to live about 5 to 10 years, with some surviving longer in safe habitats. Sea cucumbers are important ocean cleaners. They swallow sediment, digest tiny algae and organic scraps, and pass cleaner sand behind them. This recycling returns nutrients to the ecosystem and can help keep the seafloor healthy. Around the mouth is a ring of soft feeding tentacles that gathers food. Although the body feels soft, tiny mineral pieces inside the skin provide support. Some species have a surprising defence: when frightened, they can release sticky threads or even shed internal organs. The lost parts can grow again. Sea cucumbers do not have a face like a fish, but their simple body is wonderfully suited to a quiet life on the bottom. This page shows a friendly sea cucumber travelling past a rounded rock and tall seagrass. Real sea cucumbers can be chocolate brown, sandy tan, olive green, red, orange, yellow, black, or patterned with pale spots. Choose one main body colour, then make the rounded bumps a lighter or darker shade. Short strokes between the bumps can suggest soft skin, but keep the broad spaces open. Colour the tube feet underneath in a gentle matching tone. Try grey, rust, or purple for the rock and mix two or three greens in the seagrass. Make the sand cream, golden, or light peach, and give the tiny fish a bright colour. Add pale blue around the bubbles while leaving their centres white.
