Scandaroon Colouring

The Scandaroon is one of the most dramatic wattle pigeons. The National Pigeon Association standard gives its origin as Asia and records the historic name “Nuremberg Bagdad.” It is a large, tall breed, about 42–43 centimetres in the standard, with a powerful, proud carriage. Look closely at the long narrow head, strong curved beak, very long bent neck, broad breast, long bare legs, and surprisingly short tail. A pale, heart-shaped wattle sits at the base of the beak, while a clear eye cere circles the large eye. These features make the silhouette very different from that of a round city pigeon. Its precise first breeder and creation year are not securely recorded, so it is more truthful to credit many fanciers who preserved and refined this old type. There is no dependable breed-only lifespan figure; longevity varies with housing, diet, health, and care, as it does for all domestic pigeons. This page places the Scandaroon in a simple old stone courtyard so its height is easy to see. Colour the bird blue-grey with darker wing bars, rich chestnut, black, white, or a pied combination. The wattle can stay creamy white, the eye cere can be pale pink or red, and the long legs may be warm rose. Use sandy beige, honey brown, or cool grey on the arch stones. A blue sky or a faint golden sunset will make the tall white spaces around the bird feel cheerful without hiding the unusual profile. Start by tracing the long curve from beak to head and down the neck with your eyes. Colour in smooth strokes that follow that curve. Shade lightly under the wing and belly, but leave broad open areas for a clean colouring-page look. Use a darker pencil only at the edges of the feathers and between the paving stones. The little heart-shaped wattle is an important clue, so colour around it carefully. When finished, count the long legs, short tail feathers, and wing sections, then give this proud pigeon a friendly courtyard story of your own.
