Saxon Priest Colouring

Meet the Saxon Priest, a domestic fancy pigeon whose country or region of origin is Saxony in eastern Germany. Its unmistakable character is the double crest: a broad rear shell crest with rosettes plus a small carnation-shaped front crest above the beak, together with strong foot muffs and a crisp white head marking. This is a strong medium-sized field-type pigeon; standards emphasize a low, balanced body and generous feathering rather than one universal weight. This page turns those real breed features into large, friendly shapes that young colourists can recognize without making the bird look like a cartoon chicken. Historical standards say the breed was probably formed from old Blassen colour pigeons and Trumpeter pigeons. No single breeder or dependable creation year is documented, so none should be claimed. Like every domestic pigeon breed, it belongs to the species Columba livia and ultimately descends from the wild rock pigeon. It is best understood as a carefully selected loft bird, not as a separate wild species. A suitable home is A clean, dry domestic loft with low broad perches, quiet nest boxes and a secure exercise pen. The front crest must never block the eyes, and the rear crest and muffs stay healthiest when the loft is uncrowded, dry and free of sharp wire edges. Feather-footed pigeons should never be forced to walk on wire or muddy ground. Offer a balanced pigeon grain or pellet ration, suitable grit and minerals, fresh water every day, and a shallow bath. A well-kept domestic pigeon commonly lives about 8 to 15 years, and some live longer, but lifespan depends on genetics, clean housing, nutrition, veterinary attention and protection from predators. Children should admire and colour pigeons while an adult handles real birds gently. Colouring guide: First decide whether your Priest will be black, blue, red or yellow. Apply that main colour to the body and wing shields, but leave the clearly outlined head cap and wing bars white for a traditional contrast. Keep both crests easy to read: use slightly lighter pressure on the rear shell crest and trace the little front carnation crest carefully petal by petal. The muffs may match the body colour in many varieties, yet leaving a few pale feather tips can make the shape clearer. Give the eye a dark pupil, the feet a soft pink where visible, and the beak a pale flesh tone. Colour the loft door in warm brown, the stone base in light grey, and the small flowers in two bright colours without crowding the page. Before you finish, compare the two feet, the wing edges and the tail so no small section is missed. The simple background supports the story of the breed's origin, while the pigeon remains the star of the page. There is no single “correct” picture: a careful realistic palette teaches breed features, and an imaginative rainbow palette can be just as joyful.
