Reversewing Pouter Colouring

The Reversewing Pouter is a large, upright German pigeon with one of the fanciest patterns in the cropper family. It stands at roughly a 70-to-80-degree angle, carries a long streamlined body, inflates a broad pear-shaped crop, and wears deep layered feather muffs around the feet. Its name describes a surprising colour arrangement. The head has an elongated coloured spot above the beak, bordered by a white band around the eyes. The rear head, crop, back, rump, and tail are coloured, and the shoulders form a heart-shaped patch. Most of the wing shields and flights are white, as are the legs and muffs. This reverses the impression seen in many other marked pigeons. No breed-specific lifespan study is available; well-cared-for domestic pigeons can often live around 8 to 15 years. The National Pigeon Association places the breed's origin in Saxony and Thuringia in the early 1800s. European standards agree on the German regional home and long-established type. No dependable record names one inventor, so the Reversewing should be credited to generations of central German fanciers. Its size, huge crop, and foot feathering require a tall, clean, dry loft with enough room to turn and perch safely. Traditional colours are intense black, blue, red, or yellow. Pick one for the forehead spot, rear head, crop, heart-shaped shoulder area, back, rump, and tail. Leave the eye band, wing shields, flights, lower body, legs, and muffs white. Use a pencil first to trace each pattern boundary. Then fill the coloured sections smoothly, keeping the break between colour and white sharp. A black bird can have tiny green or violet highlights on the crop. Colour the timber loft brown, the grass green, and the daisies yellow and white. Crayons suit the huge crop and broad back; pencils help with the forehead spot, eye band, heart marking, toes, and muff layers. Work outward along the muff feathers so their fan shape stays clear. If you create a fantasy version, try a purple crop and teal tail, but preserve the unusual white wings that explain the breed's name.
