Relay Race Colouring Page

Relay racing is a team running event. Instead of one athlete covering the whole race, several runners complete sections called legs. A small smooth baton is passed from one teammate to the next inside a marked exchange zone. The team must combine speed with careful timing because a clean handoff keeps the baton moving forward. Relay races have been part of modern athletics since the early twentieth century, and playful relays are also popular at schools and community sports days. They teach that every team member contributes to a shared result. This page focuses on the most important moment: the baton exchange. The rear runner stretches the baton forward while the leading runner reaches one hand back and keeps moving. A waiting teammate appears farther along the lanes. Notice the open tube shape of the baton and the simple lines marking the handover area. Relay practice develops running, listening, rhythm, trust, and communication. Children should warm up, leave a safe gap, practise the exchange at walking speed first, and look where they are going. Batons should be light with smooth edges. If a baton drops, runners pick it up carefully rather than bumping into one another. Encouraging every teammate and sharing turns are more important than finishing first. Choose a strong team colour for both exchanging runners, then vary their shorts, socks, or shoe laces so each child remains individual. The distant teammate can repeat the same colour to show that everyone belongs together. Make the baton a bright yellow, orange, or green so it is easy to find between the two hands. Colour the track warm red, blue, or tan, keeping the lane and exchange-zone lines pale and crisp. Trees and grass can use two or three greens, while the sky stays light blue with white clouds. Use different natural skin and hair colours across the team. A tiny darker shade beneath the shoes can suggest movement, but avoid colouring over the baton. You could add small flags outside the track or a coach’s cone near the exchange zone. Finish by tracing the visual journey from rear runner, to baton, to reaching hand, to the waiting teammate—the whole story of cooperation in one picture.
