Reindeer Calf Colouring

Walk through a snowy northern woodland with a reindeer and its calf. Reindeer live naturally in Arctic and subarctic regions of Europe, Asia, Greenland, and North America. In North America, wild reindeer are usually called caribou. They travel across tundra, open hills, and taiga forest, following seasonal food and safer routes. The snowbanks, birches, pines, and distant hills on this page show the chilly landscape that their thick coats and sturdy bodies are built to handle. An adult reindeer may stand about 85 to 150 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh roughly 60 to 300 kilograms, depending on sex and population. Many wild reindeer live around 10 to 15 years. Their coats contain a dense woolly layer and hollow guard hairs that trap warm air. Broad, spreading hooves help them walk over snow, paddle through water, and scrape down to lichens and plants. Reindeer are unusual among deer because both males and females can grow antlers, although the size and timing differ. Their noses also help warm icy air before it reaches the lungs. Reindeer are social and often move in herds. Some caribou make enormous yearly migrations between calving and winter grounds. A calf is usually born in late spring and can stand and follow its mother surprisingly soon. It drinks milk, rests near her, and gradually learns to nibble leaves, grasses, fungi, and lichens. In this picture, the calf walks close beside the adult and looks up trustingly while their hoofprints mark the soft snow. Colour the coats with grey-brown, caramel, cream, or warm tan. A pale neck and belly can make the darker back stand out. Use dark brown on the hooves, nose, and antlers, or add lighter tips. Give the calf a gentler, lighter coat so it looks soft and young. Try blue, violet, and very pale grey for shadows in the snow while leaving plenty of paper white. Pine needles can be deep green and birch trunks white with black marks. Use crayons for broad coats and snowbanks, then pencils for antler branches, eyelashes, hoofprints, and tree bark. Let the sky stay white, turn it icy blue, or add a soft pink winter sunrise.
