Redwood Tree Colouring Page

Coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, grows naturally in a narrow foggy belt near the Pacific coast of northern California and southern Oregon in the United States. It is the tallest tree species alive today. Exceptional individuals exceed 100 metres, while many mature forest trees reach 60 to 90 metres. A coast redwood can live for more than 2,000 years. The massive trunk has thick, fibrous, deeply furrowed bark. Flat evergreen leaves line smaller branchlets, and the egg-shaped cones are surprisingly small compared with the giant tree. New trunks may also sprout from an old root system or fallen base. Misty spring weather supports this forest. Redwood foliage can collect droplets from coastal fog, adding moisture beneath the canopy even when rain is limited. Sword ferns, sorrel, fungi, salamanders, slugs, and many birds share the cool forest floor. Northern spotted owls need complex older forests with nesting and hunting places. Banana slugs recycle plant material and help spread fungal spores. They may look slow, but their work matters. Visitors should stay on paths, never enter wildlife hollows, and avoid touching slugs or peeling bark. Protecting connected redwood habitat helps the tree and the many species around it. The colouring page uses the huge trunk to show the redwood's scale. Look for furrowed bark, high leafy branches, a natural hollow, owl, banana slug, ferns, mist, and smaller distant trees. Colour the bark with red-brown, cinnamon, rust, and dark brown vertical bands. Use several forest greens on the upper leaves and ferns, with blue-green in shaded places. A northern spotted owl can be warm brown with cream spots and dark eyes. Banana slugs may be yellow, olive, greenish, or brown; add a small highlight along its back. Mist should stay mostly white with the palest blue or grey along each curve. Make distant trunks lighter and less colourful so the central giant appears close. Long upward strokes emphasise height, while short zigzag strokes can follow bark furrows without filling every white gap. Colour fern fronds from the stem outward. When finished, the enormous redwood should dominate the page, while the owl and tiny slug remind children that a giant forest also depends on small creatures.
