Rainbow Picnic Colouring Page

A bright rainbow curves over a happy picnic in a fresh late-spring meadow. Two young friends sit safely on their checked blanket with a closed basket, fruit and sandwiches ready to enjoy. The simple hills, flowers and puffy clouds leave plenty of open space, while the enormous rainbow makes the weather story easy to understand. Rainbows appear when sunlight shines through tiny drops of water in the air. Each drop bends and reflects the light, separating it into a band of colours. We usually see a rainbow when the sun is behind us and rain is falling somewhere ahead. The ground may still be damp after a shower, but the clearing sky makes a lovely time for a picnic with a grown-up. Begin with the rainbow, working from the outside band towards the inside. A familiar order is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, but young artists may invent a candy rainbow, a pastel rainbow or a pattern that repeats favourite colours. Use smooth curved strokes that follow each arch. Colour the clouds pale blue, lavender or soft grey around the edges and keep their centres light and fluffy. The distant hills can be different greens, and the small flowers can become dots of pink, yellow, purple and blue. Give the picnic blanket two cheerful colours in an alternating pattern. The basket could be honey brown with darker woven lines. Apples may be red or green, grapes purple or green, and the banana sunny yellow. Use tan for the bread and choose bright fillings for the sandwiches. The children can have any natural skin tones, hair colours and clothing colours; repeating one colour from each outfit in the blanket will tie the whole picture together. Colour slowly around fingers, faces and food, then use broader strokes in the open grass and sky. Leave a few white highlights on shiny fruit. While colouring, imagine the clean smell after rain, the soft grass and the first patch of blue sky. This page celebrates simple outdoor fun and the beautiful meeting of sunshine and raindrops.
