Rainbow Mountain River Colouring

This peaceful picture shows a rainbow stretching above tall mountains, a river, and a soaring eagle. It feels like late spring, when a quick rain shower can leave clean air, bright light, and fresh water moving down from the hills. A rainbow is not a solid object hanging in one place. It appears when sunlight enters tiny drops of water, bends, reflects inside them, and separates into different colours before reaching our eyes. Every person sees a rainbow from a slightly different position. From the ground we usually notice part of a circle, while someone very high in the sky may sometimes see a nearly complete ring. Mountain rain and melting snow can feed narrow streams that join to form a river. Rivers carry water through valleys and provide drinking places and habitats for many plants and animals. The eagle in this scene uses broad wings to glide on rising air instead of flapping all the time. From high above, its sharp eyes help it watch the land and water. Eagles should always be admired from a respectful distance, and wild nests must never be touched. The open mountains, flowing river, and flying bird make this a page about weather, water, and wildlife working together. Begin colouring the rainbow from its outer band toward the inner band. You might use red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, or invent a gentle fantasy pattern of your own. Try light grey, brown, or purple on the distant mountains, then leave small white areas on their highest peaks for snow. Colour the nearer hills with spring greens and the river with pale blue, turquoise, or silver-blue. Darker blue strokes along the river edges can suggest deeper water, while a few narrow white gaps can look like reflected sunlight. The eagle may be brown and cream with a golden beak, or grey and white if you prefer an imaginary mountain bird. Use long strokes in the direction of its feathers and smooth curved strokes along the river. Keep the sky pale so the rainbow remains the brightest part of this fresh after-rain landscape.
