Rainbow Farm Colouring Page

A wide rainbow curves above a farmhouse and barn in this peaceful early-summer farm scene. The rain has passed, the clouds are lifting, and neat rows of young crops are ready to use the water in the soil. A winding path leads between the house and the barn, while a fence separates the buildings from the fields. Farmhouses are homes for farming families, and barns can shelter tools, animal feed or harvested crops. The simple tree in the centre can provide shade and help hold soil with its roots. Everything has been drawn with broad shapes and clear lines so the buildings, plants and sky are comfortable for young children to colour. Rainbows form when sunlight meets many tiny water droplets. Light bends as it enters a droplet, reflects inside and bends again as it leaves. Different colours bend by slightly different amounts, so they spread into bands. We normally see a rainbow when the sun is behind us and the rain is ahead. It may look close to the field, but it moves with the viewer because it is made by light reaching the eyes, not by a coloured bridge touching the ground. Early-summer showers are useful on a farm because they moisten the soil during a busy growing season. Too little rain can dry plants, while too much can make fields muddy, so farmers pay close attention to weather. Colour the rainbow first with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, or invent a new seven-colour order. Use pale blue around the clouds to keep them soft. The farmhouse could be cream, yellow or light blue with a red or grey roof. A traditional barn may be red with white doors, but brown, blue or green are also fun choices. Make the path sandy tan and the fence warm brown. Colour the young plants with fresh green leaves and darker green shadows near the soil. The larger tree can use two greens in its crown and grey-brown on its trunk. Use smooth curved strokes inside the rainbow, straight strokes on roofs and doors, and short upward strokes on seedlings. Keep window panes light and leave small white highlights on wet leaves to show that sunshine has returned after the shower.
