Rainbow Butterfly Colouring

This cheerful summer garden places a huge rainbow above blooming flowers and three friendly butterflies. A rainbow can appear when sunshine meets water droplets left in the air by rain, mist, or even a garden sprinkler. Each drop acts a little like a tiny prism, bending white sunlight and spreading it into colours. The familiar order is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The arc looks enormous, but it has no reachable end; it moves with the viewer because it depends on the angle between the Sun, the drops, and your eyes. Warm summer days bring many flowers into bloom. Their colours and scents help guide pollinators toward nectar. Butterflies drink through a long, coiled mouthpart called a proboscis. As they move between flowers, grains of pollen can travel with them and help plants make seeds. A butterfly begins life as an egg, becomes a caterpillar, rests inside a chrysalis, and finally emerges with wings. The large, simple butterflies on this page have open wing sections that are easy to colour. Real butterflies should be watched gently without touching their delicate wings, and garden flowers are safest for wildlife when adults avoid unnecessary pesticides. Start with the rainbow, using traditional colours or a carefully repeated fantasy palette. Choose two or three flower families for the garden. You could make the largest blossoms yellow and orange, the smaller ones pink and purple, and the leaves several shades of green. Give each butterfly a balanced pattern by repeating the same colours on both wings. One might be orange and black like a monarch, another blue and violet, and the third yellow and green. Keep the bodies darker and make the antennae easy to see. Use broad circular strokes inside the flower centres, smooth strokes from the base to the tip of every petal, and short strokes along each leaf. A pale blue sky will help the coloured wings and rainbow stand out. Leave a few white highlights on petals as if they are still holding raindrops. Your finished page can celebrate the way sunshine, water, flowers, and insects turn a garden into a busy summer habitat.
