Rainbow Birds Balloon Colouring

Five little birds sweep through a clear spring sky as four round balloons float beneath an enormous rainbow. The rain has passed, the clouds are breaking apart and the distant hills look fresh. Birds fly by pushing air with their wings, while a balloon rises only when it contains a gas that is lighter than the surrounding air. Real balloons must always be held securely and taken home after a celebration. A loose balloon can become litter and may harm animals, so this picture invites children to enjoy the cheerful shapes while remembering to keep balloons tied and dispose of them carefully. A rainbow appears when sunlight enters tiny drops of rain, bends, reflects and separates into visible colours. Although the drawing shows a neat arch, a complete rainbow is actually a circle; the horizon usually hides the lower part from people standing on the ground. Colour the broad bands with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, beginning at the outside. Use long, smooth strokes following the curve. You can make the colours strong, or layer them gently for a softer rainbow. Give each balloon a different bright colour, or repeat two colours in a balanced pattern. Leave the small shine shape inside each balloon white so it looks glossy. The strings can stay dark and thin. The birds may be robins, doves, bluebirds or imaginary spring songbirds. Try warm brown and orange on one, blue and grey on another, and soft cream on a third. Keep their beaks and eyes neat, and colour both wings of each bird in a matching way. The clouds can remain mostly white with pale blue edges, while the rolling hills can use fresh yellow-green, emerald and darker green bushes. Work from the top of the page downward so your hand does not rub finished areas. Broad crayons are useful for the rainbow and hills; sharpened pencils help around wings, beaks and strings. While colouring, imagine a gentle breeze carrying birds across the sky after a spring shower. The finished page can feel airy and joyful while sharing two useful ideas: rain and sunshine make a rainbow, and careful people never release balloons where wildlife could find them.
