Rainbow Balloon Ride Colouring

Two young passengers wave from a hot air balloon as it floats beneath a giant rainbow. Three little birds fly nearby, and soft hills roll across the ground below. The calm air suggests a summer morning just after light rain. Rainbows appear when sunlight meets many drops of water. Light bends as it enters a drop, reflects inside, then bends again as it leaves. This spreads the light into colours. We usually name the bands red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, although a real rainbow blends smoothly from one shade into the next. A hot air balloon rises for a different reason. A burner warms the air inside the large fabric envelope. Warm air is less dense than the cooler air around it, so the balloon can lift. The pilot changes the heat to help the balloon rise or descend, while the wind guides its direction. Real balloon rides require trained pilots, suitable weather, safety checks, and secure baskets. Passengers listen carefully and never climb in without responsible adults. Birds also use moving air. They adjust their wings and tails to glide, turn, and land, but a careful pilot always gives wildlife plenty of space. Colour the rainbow first so it creates the main colour plan for the page. The balloon can echo some of those shades in wide alternating panels: try red and yellow, blue and green, or a complete rainbow pattern. Make the sturdy basket tan or warm brown and colour the ropes a darker shade. Give the children two different outfits so each passenger is easy to see. The birds may be pale blue, brown, yellow, or grey with lighter bellies. Use several soft greens and golds across the rolling hills to show summer fields, then keep the sky very pale blue. Smooth curved strokes will follow the balloon's rounded shape, and short strokes will suit the woven basket. Leave narrow white highlights on the balloon panels and a few open spaces around the birds. The picture should feel peaceful rather than stormy: a safe, gentle flight in fresh morning air, with the bright rainbow high above the landscape.
