Pufferfish Colouring Page

Pufferfish are a large family of unusual fish found in warm and temperate waters around the world. Most live in the sea, especially near reefs, seagrass beds, sandy bottoms, and rocky coasts, but some species live in estuaries or freshwater rivers. They are usually slow swimmers, using their small fins to steer with careful, fluttering movements. Their four strong tooth plates form a beak that can crack snails, shellfish, and other hard food. When frightened, a pufferfish can quickly gulp water and expand its stretchy stomach, turning its body into a much larger ball that is hard for a predator to swallow. Puffing is a serious defence, not a game, so wild or aquarium fish should never be scared on purpose. The pufferfish family includes tiny species only a few centimetres long and large ones over 60 centimetres. Lifespan also differs: many live about 5–10 years, while some species may survive 15 years or more. Their skin is rough and may carry tiny prickles, but true porcupinefish have much longer spines. Many puffers also contain a powerful natural toxin, another reason to admire them without touching or eating them. Their curious eyes can move separately, helping them watch several directions. This page shows a friendly pufferfish already inflated above a simple seabed. Try a golden-yellow, sandy tan, pale green, or light-blue body. Colour the short prickles a slightly darker shade so each one is visible, and add brown, olive, or blue spots between them if you want. The small fins can be translucent pale yellow or a brighter contrasting colour such as orange. Use cream for the shell, tan and grey for the rocks, and two greens for the seagrass. A light-blue water background will make the round fish stand out; leave bubbles white with blue rims. Start at the centre of the body and colour outward in curved strokes that follow its round shape. Press lightly near the eyes and mouth, then colour each fin from base to edge. Finish the sand with a few gentle dots or short strokes, keeping the scene open, bright, and easy to read.
