Parlor Roller Colouring

The Parlor Roller is a highly specialised domestic pigeon known for backward rolling on the ground rather than in the sky. Most breed accounts connect its roots with Scotland and mid-nineteenth-century stock, while later development and competitions became important in North America. Because historical sources disagree on the exact pathway, it is safest not to name one inventor or a precise founding year. The bird itself looks fairly simple: small and compact, with a rounded head, short beak, full chest, clean legs, folded wings, and a tight tail. Mature Parlor Rollers may have very limited flight. Their rolling is inherited and should never be produced by throwing, frightening, or hurting a bird. Responsible keepers use soft, level, obstacle-free areas and protect the pigeons from falls and collisions. No dependable breed-only lifespan is available; careful housing, nutrition, hygiene, and expert welfare decisions are especially important for this unusual performance breed. The colouring page shows the Parlor Roller standing quietly inside a safe pigeon room. There is a low perch, an open doorway, and two grains on the smooth floor. Try almond, cream, red, white, black, blue-grey, or a tigered pattern on the feathers. Colour the beak pale horn, the feet soft pink, and the eye dark with a bright white highlight. The wooden perch can be honey brown, and the floor may be pale tan or cool grey. Keep the doorway light and welcoming. Start with the large chest and wing shapes. Use soft circular strokes on the body and long strokes on the tail. If you choose an almond pattern, mix warm tan, cream, and a few darker flecks without crowding the page. A slight shadow under the belly will make the standing posture clear. This picture intentionally does not show the bird rolling, because a calm, upright pose is kinder and easier for children to understand. Young colourers can make one simple feather colour; older children can add symmetrical patches. Finish by drawing a shallow water bowl in the corner and talk about how every animal’s safety matters more than a trick or competition result.
