Papaya Plant Colouring Page

Papaya looks like a tree, but botanically it is a very large, fast-growing herb with a soft hollow stem rather than hard woody branches. It originated in tropical parts of the Americas and is now grown across warm regions. A papaya commonly reaches about 2 to 8 metres. Huge, deeply lobed leaves form an umbrella-like crown at the top, and old leaf bases leave rings on the stem. Small waxy flowers grow close to the trunk. Depending on the plant, flowers may be male, female or both. Long oval fruits hang in clusters beneath the leaves and can ripen in many warm months. Papayas grow quickly but are often short-lived compared with trees, commonly producing well for several years rather than many decades. Bees, moths and other insects visit the flowers, while birds and bats may eat ripe fruit and spread seeds. This page includes a sunbird and butterfly near the flower cluster, gentle clouds and a watering can to suggest a cared-for late-summer garden. Papaya stems and roots can be damaged easily, so children should not climb or pull them. The milky sap from unripe fruit may irritate skin, and an adult should prepare the fruit. Ripe flesh is eaten after washing and cutting; the many black seeds are usually removed or used carefully according to family recipes. Use light green and yellow-green for the giant leaves, with darker lines radiating through each lobe. The soft ringed trunk may be pale green, tan or warm grey. Colour unripe fruit green and ripe papayas golden yellow, orange or coral. If you add a cut fruit, give it orange flesh and a centre filled with glossy black or deep brown seeds. Flowers can be white or cream with yellow centres. A sunbird may be olive, yellow, purple or blue, and the butterfly can repeat two bright colours across both wings. Colour the watering can turquoise or red, the grass fresh green and the distant clouds pale blue-grey. Long strokes from the centre of each leaf will emphasize its star-like shape. Keep the fruit cluster bold and uncluttered so children can see how papayas attach directly below the crown.
