Oriental Roller Colouring

The Oriental Roller is an old performance pigeon from the Middle East and Asia Minor, particularly associated with the Turkish region. It became famous for varied aerial movements, including tumbles, rolls, dives, and sudden turns. Modern organisations recognise both flying and exhibition types, so fanciers may emphasise performance, appearance, or both. A standing Oriental Roller has a small smooth head, an athletic body, long wings whose tips may be carried below the tail line, and a broad tail with more feathers than a typical pigeon. The National Pigeon Association includes flying and show standards, while American Oriental Roller clubs explain that both traditions remain active. The ancient regional origin is clearer than the identity of one creator; no dependable single breeder or exact starting year is recorded. Size varies between strains, and a separate breed-specific lifespan is not established. Safe flight space, careful training, nutritious food, clean water, and a secure loft are essential. This page shows the bird at rest in an Anatolian stone courtyard, allowing the long flights and broad tail to be coloured clearly. Try bronze, almond, black, red, blue-grey, white, or a mottled pattern. You can colour the wing coverts one shade and the long primary feathers a darker shade. Grape leaves may be green, purple grapes can hang from the vine, and the stones can alternate warm sand and cool grey. Keep the hills pale so the broad tail remains the focus. Start at the shoulder and colour each long flight feather toward its tip. On the tail, use wide strokes and leave the dividing lines visible. Add soft shading beneath the wing, but do not turn the tail into a dark fan; its individual feathers should still be easy to count. Young children can use one bold body colour, while older artists can combine bronze and cream in a balanced pattern. The pigeon is shown standing, not performing, because aerial rolling should only be managed by experienced keepers in a safe setting. Finish by adding a light sky and imagining the bird returning calmly to its courtyard after exercise.
