Orca Family Colouring Page

Orcas, also called killer whales, are actually the largest members of the dolphin family. They live in every ocean, from tropical seas to icy polar waters, although many populations have favourite regions and very different ways of finding food. An adult male may reach about 9.8 metres and weigh up to 10 tonnes, while adult females are usually smaller. Wild males often live around 30 years and may reach 60, while females commonly live about 50 years and some can survive for 80 or 90 years. Orcas are famous for strong family bonds. Mothers, calves and related adults may stay together in stable pods, learning calls and hunting skills from one another. Each community can have its own call patterns, almost like a local language. Different orca groups specialise in different prey, including fish, squid or marine mammals, and they cooperate with remarkable timing. Their black-and-white markings help break up the body's outline underwater. In this gentle picture, a mother and calf swim side by side beneath floating ice. Start with the classic orca pattern: colour the main back, sides, dorsal fin and flippers rich black or very dark navy. Leave the belly, lower jaw, eye patches and the pale saddle-shaped area behind the dorsal fin white or light cream. If solid black feels too strong, use dark grey around the edges and softer charcoal toward the middle. Keep the calf's pattern similar but slightly lighter to show that it is young. Colour the water with cool blues and turquoise. The underside of the ice can be pale blue, lavender or icy grey, while the upper areas stay white. Use sandy beige and soft grey for the seabed, then add green or blue-green seagrass. Small bubbles can remain white with a thin blue edge. Smooth strokes that follow each body from head to tail will make the pair look sleek. Gentle horizontal strokes help the water feel calm. You may add a faint glow filtering around the ice or a few tiny fish far away, but keep the family easy to see. This is a lovely page for practising strong contrast while remembering that orcas are intelligent, social animals whose calves learn by staying close to their families.
