Orangutan Baby Colouring

Meet an orangutan parent and baby high among the rainforest branches. Orangutans are great apes, not monkeys, and their name comes from words meaning “person of the forest.” Wild orangutans live only on the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. They spend most of their time in tropical forest trees, using remarkably long arms and powerful curved fingers to climb, reach, and swing. Their flexible shoulders and grasping feet make life above the ground easier. On this page the adult holds two strong branches while the youngster stays close, just as a real baby depends on its mother for safety and lessons. An adult orangutan standing upright may reach about 1.2 to 1.5 metres tall. Females often weigh roughly 30 to 50 kilograms, while large males can weigh 50 to 90 kilograms or more. In the wild, many live for 30 to 40 years, and some survive longer. Orangutan childhood is unusually long. A baby rides on its mother, shares her nest, watches where she finds fruit, and learns difficult forest skills for about seven or eight years. That long learning period is one reason the mother-and-baby bond is so important. Orangutans mostly eat fruit, but they also enjoy leaves, bark, shoots, and insects. Begin colouring the orangutans with warm rusty orange, copper, chestnut, or reddish brown. Try a slightly darker shade along the adult’s long arms and a lighter colour around both faces. Their skin can be soft brown, tan, or grey-brown. Leave a tiny white sparkle in each eye to keep the expressions lively. The broad leaves may be emerald, lime, or deep forest green, and the branches can be several shades of brown. A pale blue background or a very light green wash can suggest distant rainforest without hiding the bold outlines. Use broad crayon strokes for the large bodies and leaves, then choose sharpened pencils for fingers, toes, eyes, and leaf veins. Follow the fur lines in the direction the hair grows. You can add small colour changes instead of pressing hard everywhere. Most importantly, keep the baby easy to see against the adult and enjoy creating a peaceful treetop family scene.
