Old German Owl Colouring

Meet the Old German Owl, a special fancy pigeon connected with Germany. Its country or region of origin is Germany. Its soft, rounded head, short but functional beak, small pointed crest, and tidy reversed-feather breast frill create a sweet owl-like face. The body is compact and balanced, without the huge curls or hoods seen in some other structure breeds. Germany is the breed’s accepted country of origin, and the type belongs to the old European family of owl and frill pigeons. It was selected and refined by many German fanciers over generations. The phrase “Old German” reflects that long tradition, but surviving standards do not identify one founder or a certain creation year. Modern breed clubs continue to value a healthy, harmonious form as well as the frill. A historic German owl pigeon refined over many generations; surviving breed histories do not establish one developer or exact founding year. The Old German Owl is a domestic pigeon, not a separate wild species. It is a small-to-medium pigeon with a compact, rounded outline and close feathering. Exhibition size is described by body proportions rather than one universal length, so individual birds vary. With a clean, dry loft, room to exercise, balanced pigeon food, mineral grit, fresh water, companionship, and prompt veterinary help, a well-kept domestic pigeon can often live about 8 to 15 years. Decorative feathers need gentle care, and heavily feathered feet or crests should be checked regularly. These birds belong with knowledgeable keepers; children can admire them quietly and let an adult handle all daily care. Old German Owls can be white, black, red, yellow, blue, silver, or patterned. A pale body with coloured wing shields makes the little frill easy to spot. Use a slightly darker shade beneath the chest curls and crest. Start with the round head and body, then fill the wing shields and tail. Use short upward strokes on the chest frill and tiny pointed strokes on the crest. Colour the half-timbered shed cream and brown, the daisies white with yellow centres, the leaves in fresh greens, and the snail in warm earthy shades. Keep the sky very pale. Do not press too hard around the face; leaving small white spaces will preserve the gentle expression and clear feather edges.
