Norwich Cropper Colouring

The Norwich Cropper is a friendly English exhibition pigeon with one unforgettable feature: a huge, smoothly rounded globe held in front of a very erect body. The small head sits neatly above the globe, the short body narrows like a cone toward the tail, and the clean legs stand straight and often on tiptoe. The National Pigeon Association describes the breed as companionable and able to hold its crop inflated for long periods during display. Adults average about 15 to 16 ounces, and the standard says length should not exceed about 15 inches from beak to tail. These are show measurements, not goals to force onto a bird. A well-cared-for domestic pigeon may often live around 8 to 15 years, though no special Norwich lifespan study is available. The breed comes from Norwich and surrounding parts of Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex in England. Its exact beginnings are old and uncertain. The NPA links it to the extinct Powting Horseman and perhaps the Dutch Uploper described by John Moore in 1735. Because those ancestors disappeared and detailed mating records do not survive, no single creator or founding year can be named responsibly. Generations of East Anglian breeders shaped the round globe, visible waist, erect stance, and lively character seen today. Norwich Croppers occur in black, blue, brown, silver, red, yellow, cream, white, and patterned varieties. Choose one main colour and fill the enormous globe with smooth curved strokes. Make the body a matching or contrasting shade and keep the narrow waist visible. A white bird can have a pale cream shadow near the outline, while a black bird can carry green or violet gleams on the crop. Colour the legs warm red or pink and the eye orange-red unless you choose a white variety with dark eyes. The cottage wall can be red brick, the loft tan, and the hollyhock pink, red, or purple. Use a large crayon for the globe and background, then pencils for the tiny head, beak, toes, and flower centres. Leave one small highlight in the eye. Most of all, keep the pigeon looking comfortable and cheerful as it shows off its remarkable balloon-like crop.
