Moray Eel Reef Colouring Page

Moray eels are a family of long-bodied fish found in tropical and temperate oceans around the world. Many species live on coral reefs, rocky shores, and sandy bottoms, hiding inside caves and narrow crevices from the shoreline down to several hundred metres. The family includes roughly 200 species, so size and lifespan vary greatly. Small morays may be only about 15 centimetres long, while the biggest can approach 4 metres. Many familiar reef species grow between 60 centimetres and 1.5 metres. Scientists have less lifespan information from the wild, but depending on the species, morays may live around 10 to 30 years, especially when protected and well cared for. A moray does not have large paired fins like many fish. Its dorsal, tail, and anal fins join into one long ribbon, helping the muscular body twist through cracks. Tubular nostrils give it an excellent sense of smell. A moray often opens and closes its mouth, not because it is angry, but to pump water across its gills for breathing. Its most surprising tool is a second set of jaws in its throat. These pharyngeal jaws move forward to grip food and pull it back for swallowing—very useful when the eel cannot create strong suction inside a tight cave. Morays eat fish, crabs, shrimp, and octopuses, and most prefer to stay hidden rather than chase people. Begin the eel with olive green, tan, rusty brown, or blue-grey. Many species have spots, bands, or marbled patches, so colour the outlined markings in chocolate brown, golden yellow, cream, or black while leaving some light spaces. Make the inside of the mouth soft pink and the teeth ivory rather than bright white. Try sandy beige, warm grey, and reddish brown on the surrounding rocks. Coral and sea plants can be orange, purple, green, or red, while the passing fish can be yellow and blue. Use dark inside the crevice and lighter colours near its opening to show shelter and depth. Keep strokes slow around the eel's winding outline, and add a pale blue wash to the open water so bubbles remain easy to spot.
