Moose Calf Colouring

Meet a tall mother moose and her young calf beside a quiet mountain lake. Moose live across the cooler northern parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. In Europe and Asia they are often called elk, while the animal called elk in North America is a different deer. Moose favour forests mixed with ponds, marshes, rivers, and lakes because these places provide leafy food, cool water, and shelter. The pines, rocks, grasses, and distant mountains on this page make a perfect summer home. Moose are the largest members of the deer family. A grown adult may stand about 1.4 to 2.1 metres high at the shoulder and can weigh roughly 270 to 700 kilograms, although size varies by age, sex, and region. Many live around 10 to 20 years in the wild. Adult males grow broad antlers and shed them, but females, called cows, do not have antlers. Both have long legs for stepping through deep snow and wet ground, large ears for catching sounds, and a flexible upper lip for gathering twigs and leaves. Moose are also powerful swimmers and may eat water plants from lakes. A young moose is called a calf. Calves are usually born in spring and stay close to their mother while they learn where to feed and hide. A cow can defend her calf bravely, yet most moose prefer calm space rather than conflict. In this friendly scene, the antlerless mother stands beside the calf at the water's edge. The calf looks up while the adult keeps watch, showing a gentle family bond. Try warm chocolate brown, reddish brown, or deep tan for the mother's coat, with darker legs and a dark muzzle. The calf can be a softer cinnamon or golden brown. Add pale tan inside the ears and leave tiny white highlights in the eyes. Colour the pines several greens, the rocks grey or sandy brown, and the mountains cool blue-grey, purple, or brown. The lake can reflect blue, turquoise, or even sunset colours. Use broad crayons for the bodies and water, then sharpen a pencil for hooves, ears, grass, and ripples. Keep your strokes smooth inside the bold outlines and make the peaceful mountain morning your own.
