Modena Pigeon Colouring

The Modena is nicknamed the Bird of Curves because almost every part of its exhibition shape is rounded. It has a short, broad, powerful body, a full neck, a protruding breast, widely spaced straight legs, short broad wings, and a tail pulled strongly upward. The breed's older roots lie around Modena in northern Italy, where Triganino pigeons were once used in competitive flying. The modern English-type Modena became much rounder and is now an exhibition bird. An older North American standard used about 9 inches for ideal height and 7 inches for length, showing how compact the shape is. No special lifespan study exists, but a carefully kept domestic pigeon can often live around 8 to 15 years. Italian club history says Triganino stock reached Germany in 1876 and England around 1876–1878. British breeders then transformed the body while preserving the rich colours and patterns. The first English Modena Club formed in 1910 with Godfrey Hazeltine as president. Sources discuss several influential fanciers, but no single person can be named as the sole inventor of today's type. The National Modena Club in North America has supported the breed since 1936. Two important pattern groups are Gazzi and Schietti. A Gazzi has coloured head and throat, wing shields, and tail, with much of the body white. A Schietti is essentially coloured throughout. This page outlines a simple Gazzi pattern. Pick blue, black, bronze, red, yellow, silver, or another favourite for the coloured sections, and leave the broad body white. Keep the raised tail clear and make the legs reddish pink. Colour the garden wall warm brick, the flowers brightly, and the grass in two greens. Broad crayons suit the round breast and background. Pencils help along the Gazzi boundaries, eye, toes, and individual tail feathers. Use curved strokes that follow the bird's body rather than straight scribbles. You can also invent a Schietti by filling the whole bird, or create a fantasy Gazzi with purple shields and a teal tail while keeping the compact, proud shape.
