Metriacanthosaurus Colouring

Step quietly into a Jurassic forest and meet Metriacanthosaurus! This medium-large meat-eating dinosaur is walking through a clearing filled with broad ferns, cycads, tall conifer trees, and fallen branches. The dinosaur is shown from head to tail so young artists can notice its long, balanced body, strong back legs, narrow head, and small three-fingered forelimbs. A modest row of raised spines follows the top of its back. These spines form a low ridge, not the enormous sail seen on some other prehistoric animals. The open shapes and clear outlines make every part inviting to colour. Metriacanthosaurus lived in what is now England during the Middle Jurassic Period, around 168 to 166 million years ago. Its fossils are incomplete, so scientists continue to compare its bones with those of related theropods. Estimates suggest an adult may have measured around 7 to 8 metres long, although its exact size is uncertain. Its name means “moderately spined lizard” and refers to the taller-than-usual neural spines on some of its backbone bones. These supported muscles and a low ridge along the body; they did not make a giant sail. Like other theropods, it moved on two legs and used a long tail to balance as it walked. Its three-fingered hands and sharp teeth help palaeontologists place it among predatory dinosaurs. Choose a natural forest palette or invent your own. You might colour Metriacanthosaurus moss green with a pale cream belly, sandy brown with dark stripes, or rusty red with small spots. Shade the low back ridge a slightly brighter colour so this special feature is easy to see. Use gentle greens for the ferns and cycads, and try deeper green on the conifer needles. Fallen branches can be tan or brown with darker ends, while the soil may be ochre, grey, or warm beige. Keep the sky light so the dinosaur remains the star. For extra texture, add tiny dots on the skin and short wood-grain lines on the logs without filling every open space. Which colours would help this forest hunter blend among the plants?
