Marsupial Lion Colouring

The Australian marsupial lion, Thylacoleo carnifex, was not a true lion. It was a meat-eating marsupial related more closely to wombats and koalas than to cats. Fossils occur across much of Australia, including New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. Adults were about 1.5 metres long and around 75 centimetres high at the shoulder, with estimates above 100 kilograms for large individuals. Its broad skull held stabbing front incisors and enormous blade-like premolars for slicing food. Powerful forelimbs, flexible wrists and a large retractable thumb claw helped it grip. A strong tail and climbing ability may have supported ambush hunting or carrying food. Fossils of an adult with young show that it raised pouch-young, but its normal lifespan is unknown. This animal's most remarkable feature was its combination of marsupial ancestry and extremely specialised cutting teeth. It probably hunted large Australian herbivores, although details of its behaviour remain open to study. Thylacoleo disappeared late in the Pleistocene, often placed around 46,000 years ago. No named final individual is known. Australia became drier and habitats changed, while many large prey animals also declined. People had reached the continent by this time, so hunting, fire and landscape changes may have added pressure. Scientists debate how much each factor mattered, and it is safest to describe the extinction as a combination rather than blame one proven event. Colour the marsupial lion with sandy gold, tawny brown, rust or soft grey. A paler belly and muzzle will show its shape, while the nose, claws and paw pads can be dark brown or charcoal. Use short curved strokes on the cheeks and shoulders, then smooth strokes along the back and long tail. Make the eucalyptus leaves blue-green or olive, the trunk grey-brown, the grass tree deep green and the rocks ochre or warm grey. Add pale violet to the distant hills if you like. Keep the claws clearly outlined rather than colouring them all black. The simple white spaces help young artists notice the strong forelegs, grasping paws and long balancing tail—the special clues that separate this extinct marsupial from an ordinary African lion.
