Manta Ray Colouring Page

A manta ray seems to fly through the sea on two enormous triangular fins. Giant and reef manta rays live in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate waters around the world. They travel through open ocean but also visit islands, lagoons and reefs where currents concentrate plankton or small fish clean parasites from their skin. Depending on the species, adults may span roughly 3 to 7 metres from wing tip to wing tip, and exceptional giant mantas can be even broader. Scientists continue to study their lifespan, but mantas are long-lived rays that can survive for several decades. Unlike many stingrays, a manta does not have a venomous tail spine. It is a gentle filter feeder. The two rolled fins beside its mouth, called cephalic lobes, unfurl to guide plankton-rich water into the wide mouth. Water then passes across specialised filtering structures while the food is trapped. Mantas have large brains for fish, show curious behaviour and may repeatedly visit cleaning stations where smaller fish remove parasites. In this scene, the wide fins make the animal look like a beautiful underwater kite above the reef. Colour the upper body deep blue-grey, charcoal, blackish blue or rich brown. Mantas often have white shoulder patches and unique markings, so leave parts pale or invent a symmetrical pattern. The underside can be white or cream with a few soft grey spots. Keep the cephalic lobes easy to see by colouring their outer edges slightly darker than the mouth area. Use coral pink, orange, violet and golden yellow on the reef, with green or teal seagrass. The water may be light turquoise near the manta and deeper blue farther away. Smooth outward strokes from the centre toward each wing tip will emphasise the ray's wide, flowing shape. Curve your strokes gently around the body and tail. Leave bubbles mostly white with pale blue edges. You can add a couple of tiny cleaner fish for scale, but keep the open water spacious. Take special care not to turn the manta into a stingray by adding a barb. When complete, your picture should celebrate its harmless feeding style, graceful swimming and remarkable wingspan, with the broad animal clearly floating above a bright but simple tropical reef.
