Maltese Pigeon Colouring

The Maltese pigeon may sound as if it comes from Malta, but its documented roots point instead to northern Italy and later Austria. It is the largest of the classic hen pigeons and has a silhouette unlike an ordinary street pigeon. Very long straight legs support a short, tucked-up body. A long, nearly vertical neck rises from a broad rounded breast, while the tiny wings and extremely short tail are carried high. Together these lines make a striking U-shaped outline. Historical show descriptions aimed for birds about 16 inches or more in height, although healthy balance matters more than forcing extreme size. Maltese are not strong long-distance flyers and often prefer low nest sites. Breed-specific lifespan research is unavailable; responsibly kept domestic pigeons can often live around 8 to 15 years. Austrian rare-breed history traces the Maltese ancestor to the Livorno or Leghorn pigeon of northern Italy, described in the eighteenth century. Birds reached Austria before 1850, where fanciers refined the modern type and used French Bagadais ancestry. Some later accounts give dates around the late nineteenth century for further development, but no trustworthy source names a single inventor. The name therefore preserves tradition rather than a precise island birthplace. Maltese pigeons can be white, black, blue barred, brown, red, yellow, chequered, pied, or tigered. Start with one clear body colour and use smooth vertical strokes along the neck. Make the raised tail the same shade or a strong contrast. Colour the sturdy legs warm red or pink, and give the eye a bright orange-red ring. A little green or violet on a black neck can suggest feather sheen. Colour the grapes purple, red, or green, the vine brown, and the courtyard stones pale tan. Use crayons for the body, wall, and leaves, then sharpen pencils for the long toes, beak, eye, and grape stems. Keep the very short body easy to see between the long neck and upright tail. For a playful version, choose a snowy white bird with rainbow tail feathers, while preserving the tall U-shaped pose that makes the Maltese special.
