Macrauchenia Colouring

Macrauchenia patachonica was one of the last litopterns, an extinct group of South American hoofed mammals. Fossils are especially famous from Patagonia in Argentina and Chile, although relatives lived across much of the continent. Charles Darwin collected the first scientifically described remains in Patagonia. Macrauchenia stood roughly three metres long and had a long neck, sturdy body, long legs and three toes on each foot. The nostril opening lay unusually high on the skull. Artists once gave the animal a long tapir-like trunk, but soft tissue does not fossilise, so the safest reconstruction uses a modest flexible snout rather than a definite elephant trunk. Its special character was a camel-like outline created by an entirely different evolutionary history. Ancient proteins and DNA show that litopterns were distant relatives of living horses, rhinoceroses and tapirs, not camels. Macrauchenia probably browsed and grazed in open woodland and grassland, using its long neck to reach varied plants. Its exact lifespan is unknown. The species survived until roughly 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. No named last individual exists. South American climates and vegetation changed at the end of the Ice Age, while people also hunted large mammals. Both forces may have mattered, and researchers avoid claiming a single certain cause. Colour Macrauchenia sandy tan, soft grey, chestnut or pale golden brown. Make the belly and short snout cream, the nose dark grey and the three-toed feet charcoal-brown. You may add slightly darker colour along the mane line without inventing giraffe spots or a camel hump. Use long strokes down the neck and legs, and gentle curved strokes around the body. The Patagonian grass can be straw, olive and yellow-green, the stream light blue, and the mountains grey-purple with white highlights. Keep the sky pale and the background light. Most importantly, make the nose short and uncertain-looking rather than a long elephant trunk. The finished picture should celebrate how fossils and new molecular evidence can improve our ideas about an animal's true family tree.
