Lobster Reef Colouring Page

This impressive lobster is a hard-shelled crustacean built for life on the ocean floor. The American lobster, shown by the picture's two large claws, lives in the northwest Atlantic from Labrador and Newfoundland south to North Carolina. It shelters beneath rocks, in crevices, or in burrows on mud and gravel. Adults often measure about 25 to 60 centimetres, but exceptional lobsters can grow much larger and weigh nearly 20 kilograms. Exact age is difficult to measure because lobsters shed their shells, yet scientists think some American lobsters may live for 100 years. A lobster has ten legs. The first pair ends in two specialised claws: a heavy crusher can break shells, while a narrower cutter grips and tears softer food. Long antennae sense obstacles and chemicals in dark water. The strong fan-shaped tail can snap forward and shoot the lobster backward when danger approaches. To grow, a lobster must moult. It climbs out of its old hard covering while a larger new shell is still soft, then hides until the new armour hardens. Wild lobsters are not bright restaurant red. Many are olive green, greenish brown, dark blue-green, or speckled, with blue and orange around their joints. Cooking changes shell pigments and reveals the red colour. On this colouring page, the lobster crosses a rocky seabed with both claws, walking legs, segmented tail, and long antennae easy to follow. Choose olive, deep green, brown, navy, or a mixture for the shell. Add rust, orange, or blue accents at the joints and small spots across the claws. Colour each tail segment with smooth strokes that follow its curve. Make the rocks grey, brown, purple, or mossy green and the seaweed two shades of green. Use pale tan for the sand and soft blue around the bubbles. Keep the antennae light so their thin shapes remain visible. A tiny highlight on each eye and claw can make the friendly lobster look shiny and strong.
