Lemon Tree Garden Colouring

The lemon is an evergreen citrus tree with ancestry in Asia and a long history of cultivation around the Mediterranean and in other warm regions. A garden lemon tree usually grows about 3 to 6 metres tall, though size varies with variety, rootstock and pruning. Healthy trees can live and bear fruit for several decades. Their oval leaves release a citrus scent when gently rubbed, and flower buds may be white with a blush of purple. Fragrant blossoms can appear more than once a year in mild climates. Oval fruits with pointed ends often take six to nine months to ripen, so flowers and lemons may share a branch. Late winter and early spring can therefore show both a harvest and new pollinator activity. Bees are important visitors to citrus blossom, and swallowtail butterflies may use citrus relatives as host plants for their caterpillars. Birds hunt insects in the foliage. The page places one butterfly and one bee beside the tree, with herbs, a stone path and distant hills creating a simple Mediterranean garden. Citrus trees can have sharp thorns, so children should not push into the crown. Lemons are sour and their juice can sting cuts or eyes; an adult should help with picking and slicing. Washing fruit and leaving visiting insects undisturbed are good garden habits. Start the lemons with bright yellow, golden yellow or yellow-green. Make a few slightly different to show ripening stages, and leave tiny white highlights on the bumpy peel. Use deep green for older leaves and spring green for new ones. The blossoms may stay white with warm yellow centres, and unopened buds can be pale lavender. Colour the trunk tan or soft grey-brown. A swallowtail butterfly often combines yellow, black and touches of blue or red, while the bee can have amber and dark brown stripes. Add sage green to the herbs, cream and grey to the wall and path, pale blue to the sky, and purple-grey to far hills. Smooth oval strokes help fruit look round. Work carefully around the butterfly's matching wings and repeat colours symmetrically. The finished page should feel fresh and fragrant, with bright lemons shining against glossy leaves in the gentle turn from winter to spring.
