Leatherback Turtle Colouring

The leatherback is the largest living sea turtle and one of the ocean’s greatest travellers. It occurs across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans, nesting on warm tropical beaches but swimming far into cooler seas to find food. Some leatherbacks travel thousands of kilometres between nesting and feeding areas in a single year. Unlike other sea turtles, a leatherback has no hard, scaly shell. Its back is covered by tough, rubbery skin stretched over small bones, with seven long ridges running from front to back. This flexible body, together with enormous front flippers, helps it swim long distances and dive to remarkable depths. Most adults are about 1.5–1.8 metres long and weigh roughly 340–450 kilograms, although exceptional turtles can be much larger. Scientists cannot measure their maximum age exactly, but leatherbacks are believed to live at least 45–50 years and possibly longer. They mostly eat soft animals such as jellyfish and salps. Special backward-pointing structures inside the mouth help hold slippery food. They can dive deeper than any other turtle, sometimes approaching 1,200 metres, and may stay underwater for more than an hour. Plastic bags can resemble jellyfish, so keeping rubbish out of the sea is especially important for them. This colouring page shows a peaceful leatherback following jellyfish through open water. Start with its long ridged back. Real leatherbacks are mostly charcoal-grey or black with pale speckles, but you can keep the large ridge sections light enough to show the pattern. Try dark grey, deep blue, or violet for the shell and flippers, then add small white or pale-blue spots. Colour the soft belly cream or light grey. The jellyfish could be pink, lavender, peach, pale blue, or a rainbow mix, with lighter tentacles. Make the surface waves medium blue and the deeper water a darker shade, or use one pale blue background and add darker curves around the turtle. Tiny fish near the bottom may be silver, yellow, or blue. Keep the bubbles white with a pale-blue rim. Use smooth strokes that follow the turtle’s long body and ridges, and press lightly around the jellyfish so they look soft and almost transparent.
