Kentrosaurus Fern Colouring

Step into a warm Late Jurassic clearing and meet Kentrosaurus, a fascinating plant-eating dinosaur whose name means “spiked lizard.” Kentrosaurus lived about 152 to 145 million years ago in what is now Tanzania in eastern Africa. Fossils have been discovered in the famous Tendaguru Formation, where scientists have found the bones of many ancient animals. An adult Kentrosaurus was roughly 4 to 5 metres long, about as long as a small car plus a bicycle, but it carried a surprisingly small head. Its beak helped it nip soft ferns, cycads, and other low-growing plants. The most memorable feature ran along its back: modest plates covered the front half, then changed into long paired spikes over the hips and tail. Large spikes near the shoulders and the flexible, weapon-like tail probably helped this gentle herbivore discourage hungry predators. In this colouring page, one calm Kentrosaurus walks across an open prehistoric clearing. Look closely at the row of plates near its neck and the sharp spikes that grow longer toward the tail. Around it are feathery ferns, sturdy cycads, smooth rocks, distant hills, and tall conifers. These simple shapes create a Jurassic home without hiding the dinosaur, so young artists can clearly see its special armour. Begin with the Kentrosaurus. You might colour its body olive green, sandy brown, warm grey, or invent a bright pattern of your own. Try giving the plates a contrasting colour such as orange, red, blue, or purple, then shade the tail spikes slightly darker so they stand out. Use several greens for the ferns and cycads, deep green for the conifers, and earthy tan or grey for the rocks. Pale blue works well for the open sky, while the distant hills can be soft brown or violet. Leave a thin white highlight along the dinosaur’s back if you want it to look sunny. Colour slowly around each bold outline, and remember: nobody knows the exact colours of Kentrosaurus, so your scientific imagination is welcome!
