Jungle Rainbow Colouring Page

A baby elephant, a playful monkey and a toucan share a tropical jungle clearing beneath a bright rainbow. Large banana-like leaves and simple flowers frame the animals without hiding them. Jungles and tropical rainforests stay warm for much of the year and receive abundant rain. During the wet season, quick showers may be followed by shafts of strong sunlight, creating good conditions for a rainbow. Sunlight bends and separates into colours as it passes through suspended raindrops, reflects inside them and returns toward the viewer. Although the arc seems to hang over the treetops, it is made from light and cannot be touched. Each animal has features that help it live in a leafy habitat. An elephant uses its flexible trunk to smell, breathe, drink and grasp food. Monkeys use hands, feet and sometimes long tails to climb or balance among branches. A toucan's enormous-looking beak is lighter than it appears because its inner structure contains many air spaces. Toucans use their beaks to reach fruit and can help spread seeds after eating. Real rainforest animals live in particular regions and would not always gather as neatly as these friendly characters do; the page creates a playful mixed scene for colouring. Forest wildlife should be admired from a safe distance, and plants should not be pulled or tasted without a knowledgeable adult. Start with the seven broad rainbow bands. Use red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, or make your own tropical sequence. Colour the baby elephant soft grey, warm brown or a fantasy blue, keeping its toenails and inner ears a little lighter. The monkey can be golden brown, reddish brown or grey with a pale face and belly. Give the toucan a bold orange or yellow beak, a dark body and a bright throat, or invent a new pattern. Use rich greens on the large leaves, a lighter yellow-green on new growth and vivid pink, orange or red on the flowers. Keep the clouds white with light blue edges. Broad strokes work on the elephant and leaves; short fur-like strokes fit the monkey, and careful feather strokes suit the toucan. Leave tiny white highlights on eyes and wet leaves so the whole clearing sparkles after rain.
