Japanese Sea Lion Colouring

The Japanese sea lion, Zalophus japonicus, lived around Japan, Korea and neighbouring shores of the Sea of Japan. It was once treated as a subspecies of the California sea lion, but modern references recognise it as a separate species. Like other sea lions, it had visible external ear flaps, long front flippers that could support the body on land, and rear flippers that rotated forward for walking over rocks. Adult males were much larger than females and developed a raised forehead or crest. They gathered at rocky islands and beaches to breed, rest and care for pups, then hunted fish and squid at sea. Ancient bones show that coastal communities had known and used sea lions around the Japanese archipelago for thousands of years. Reliable details of its maximum lifespan are not available. Commercial killing intensified during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Sea lions were taken for oil, skins, meat, organs and use in exhibitions, and breeding colonies were disturbed. Numbers collapsed. The exact last year is difficult to state: confirmed populations disappeared by the mid-twentieth century, while later sightings into the 1970s were reported but not securely verified. Japan's Ministry of the Environment and the IUCN list the species as extinct. There is no documented personally named last animal. Careful wording therefore avoids turning an uncertain sighting into a precise final death. The adult male on this page can be coloured dark brown, chocolate, charcoal or grey-brown, with a lighter tan muzzle and belly. Use pale brown around the crest to make its shape clear. Colour the sea blue or blue-green, rocks grey, lavender or tan, and coastal grass green-gold. The gulls may stay white with grey wings. Long smooth strokes suit the sea lion's sleek body, while small strokes can show whiskers and short fur around the neck. Notice the tiny ear flap behind the eye and the long front flippers. Keep a white highlight along the back so this large marine mammal stays separate from the waves and rocks.
