Island Pipistrelle Colouring

The Christmas Island pipistrelle, Pipistrellus murrayi, was a tiny insect-eating bat found nowhere except Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean. It weighed only a few grams and could fit comfortably in a child's palm. At night it hunted moths and other flying insects along forest edges, tracks and small gaps in the rainforest. During the day it sheltered beneath loose bark, dead palm fronds, strangler figs and tree hollows. Its quick calls were too high for people to hear, so researchers used electronic bat detectors to record them. The species was once widespread and common, but surveys showed a steep decline and shrinking range during the 1990s and 2000s. Its natural lifespan was not established before it vanished. The last confirmed call was recorded in August 2009 in the island's far west. No individual had a known personal name, and an emergency effort to catch bats for a breeding program found none. Government experts described the extinction as a complex ecological inquest rather than a mystery with one proven answer. Yellow crazy ants, black rats, cats, giant centipedes, habitat changes, possible prey changes and other introduced pressures were investigated. An interacting ecological cascade is plausible, but the principal cause was never conclusively identified. This uncertainty is important: it shows why conservation action may need to begin before every scientific question is solved. For this page, colour the tiny bat dark brown, chestnut, grey or warm black, but keep some areas light enough to show its face and wing fingers. The thin wing membranes can be brown, mauve or smoky grey, with a lighter edge. Colour pandanus leaves bright and dark green, bark tan and brown, the crescent moon pale yellow and the moths cream or orange. Use long gentle strokes between the wing bones, following each triangular section. Short strokes suit the furry body. A deep blue or violet dusk sky is optional, but leave white space around the wings so their shape stays clear. Count the long finger bones that hold each wing and imagine the tiny bat turning quickly to catch an insect.
