Irish Elk Antlers Colouring

The Irish elk, Megaloceros giganteus, was not truly an elk and did not live only in Ireland. It was a giant deer spread across much of Europe and northern Asia. Ireland became famous for beautifully preserved skeletons found in old lake sediments and peat. A large male could weigh around 700 kilograms and rival a moose in body size. Its extraordinary palmate antlers could span about 3.5 to 4 metres from tip to tip, wider than a small car. Males grew and shed this heavy crown each year. The antlers probably helped display strength and compete with other males, while females lacked the enormous spread. Despite old stories, the deer was adapted to open grassland and parkland rather than constantly becoming trapped between trees. Giant deer disappeared from Ireland, Britain and much of western Europe around 12,000 years ago, although later populations survived farther east for several thousand years. No named final animal was recorded. Scientists once blamed extinction on antlers becoming too large, but research does not support that simple tale. Antler size actually changed as food conditions changed. After the Ice Age, open nutritious vegetation shrank or shifted, and poorer minerals and protein could reduce body condition and reproduction. Human hunting may have added stress in some regions. Environmental pressures probably made scattered populations vulnerable before the last groups disappeared. Colour the deer's coat chestnut, golden brown, tawny, grey-brown or even a mix of autumn shades. Use a cream patch on the throat and belly if you like. The huge antlers can be pale tan, warm grey or brown, with a lighter edge to show smooth bone. Follow every broad palm and tine with careful strokes instead of colouring across the outline. Make the grass green and gold, the water blue, and the distant hills soft violet or grey. Reeds can be olive with brown seed heads. Add a gentle shadow beneath the hooves while keeping the page light. Count the antler points and compare their width with the body. The finished picture should celebrate a powerful deer while teaching that its famous antlers alone did not cause its extinction.
