Indian Giant Elephant Colouring

The Indian straight-tusked elephant is usually called Palaeoloxodon namadicus. Its best-known fossils come from India, especially the Narmada and other river regions, although scientists continue to study how Asian Palaeoloxodon fossils should be divided into species. This was an immense elephant with a distinctive high crest across the top of the skull, a feature that may have helped support a very large head. Its tusks were unusually long and comparatively straight. Some fragmentary bones have produced enormous size estimates, but exact maximum figures are debated because complete skeletons are rare. A safer picture is that adults could exceed living elephants in height and mass. Broad teeth show that it ate plants, probably browsing and grazing as habitats changed across the Pleistocene. The species disappeared during the Late Pleistocene, but the date is less certain than for many European or North American Ice Age mammals. No named last animal is known. Reviews of Indian megafauna warn that several old fossil dates and species identifications need better testing. Environmental change probably altered rivers, woodland and grassland, while early people shared the landscape and sometimes processed large elephant carcasses. Evidence of butchery does not automatically prove that humans killed every animal, and researchers have not established a single cause of extinction. This uncertainty is an important part of science: new discoveries can improve the story. Colour the elephant in warm grey, slate, dusty brown or sandy beige. Use a lighter shade on the forehead crest and upper back, then gentle darker strokes under the neck and belly. Make the long tusks ivory, cream or pale gold and leave a white highlight along each straight edge. The river can be blue or turquoise, grasses yellow-green, and the trees olive with brown trunks. Give the peafowl blue, green or any imaginative colours. Straight, slow pencil strokes suit the tusks; curved strokes help show wrinkles around the trunk and knees. Keep the distant hills pale so the towering elephant stays the main feature. Count its four sturdy legs and compare the tiny bird to understand how impressive this Asian giant may have been.
