Indian Coral Tree Colouring

The Indian coral tree, Erythrina variegata, is native across tropical parts of Asia and the western Pacific and is planted in many other warm regions. It often grows 10 to 20 metres tall and may live for several decades. The trunk and branches can carry short prickles, and the leaves are divided into three broad leaflets. In late winter or early spring, the tree may lose many leaves and produce striking clusters of curved, pea-family flowers on almost bare branches. The blossoms resemble bright coral in colour and shape. Later, long pods form and hold smooth bean-like seeds. Nectar-rich flowers are valuable to sunbirds and other birds, as well as bees and butterflies. A sparse crown makes the visitors easy to see, and the tree can become a lively seasonal feeding place. Farmers sometimes plant coral trees as living supports or shade, but the prickles mean children should admire them from a safe distance. Seeds and other parts of Erythrina can be poisonous if eaten. Never taste them, and let an adult handle fallen pods. Wildlife should also be watched quietly rather than chased from flowers. Traditional flower colours include brilliant scarlet, coral red and orange-red. Colour unopened buds a deeper red and add a little yellow or pale orange near the flower openings. New three-part leaves can be light green; mature leaves may be medium or deep green. The trunk suits pale grey or warm brown, with darker colour around the small prickles so their shape is visible. A sunbird may shimmer purple, blue, green or yellow, and the butterfly can carry two bright repeating colours. Keep the grass spring green and the distant shrubs pale, with a soft blue sky behind the sparse crown. Use long smooth strokes along each curved flower and short strokes on the bird's feathers. Colour around, not over, the triangular prickles. Leave generous white space between the flower clusters because the airy, almost leafless display is part of the tree's character. Count the three leaflets in each group and compare their broad shape with the narrow flowers. The completed page should show how one tree can feed many creatures just as a dry season begins to change.
